How to Avoid Corked and Spoiled Wine

After a long hard day you often look forward to a lovely smooth drink of wine.
It can be very frustrating to open your bottle to the arid smell of vinegar and you realize that your wine is spoiled. Especially if the bottle is one you have been maturing for years.
When you invest in wine collection or if you just love a good vino then you want to enjoy every last drop.
If you want to look after you wine you need to consider the following 3 factors that may impact your wine's drink ability:
  • Light
  • Humidity - check by using a hygrometer
  • Temperature - check by using a thermometer

By adjusting these elements to the correct conditions when storing your wine you will ensure a smooth wine every time.
Here is how to optimise these 3 areas

Light - Store away from light - it can affect the phenolic compounds in the wine and create faults
Humidity - you need some moisture int he are to avoid drying the corks (wine experts recommend say 75% humidity is the ideal level to achieve)
Temperature -Its best to keep wine at a lower temperature. If it gets too hot it gets "cooked" and develops a vinegary flavour.

If it gets too cold it can cause the cork to expand and come out of the bottle’s body, oxidising the wine and causing it to spoil. Various experts say that 13°C (55F) is the ideal temperature to store wine, but it can be stored as high as 21°C (69F) without negatively affecting your wine.
